John Proctor is the main focus and baseline for the play The Crucibleby Arthur Miller. Mr. Proctor showcases himself as a working-class man, a husband, a citizen, and as a friend. John shows a variety of sides to him and holds a certain complexity. The event that occurs at the end of the play breaks John and gives the reader a glimpse of his soul and how it has sought to identify him all along.
John Proctor represents himself as another man In Salem’s village. He never needs finds himself involved in the social scene in town. John embodies power, a level-headed temper, and draws deep resentment toward refusals of partisans (page 175). Proctor has the capacity of enabling people to see how they themselves were being viewed at the time.
Married to John Proctor is Elizabeth. She is a plain women who has four children, three are boys and one is still yet to be identified because it is still unborn. John is not the stereotypical “faithful” husband. He committed lechery with the house’s servant Abigail Williams. Elizabeth has suspicions and sends Abigail out of the house on the highroad. John and Abigail’s relationship ceases but their feelings for each other remains. Proctor keeps his feelings hidden and always denies them. Abigail coveted John to the point at which she is willing to do anything to gain revenge on Elizabeth and one day potentially take her place.
As a citizen of Salem John is not and does not care enough to become heavily involved in town affiliations. He chooses to stay in the background John and Elizabeth only baptize one of their sons and only attend church on the Sabbath Day every so often. As evidence shows, presented by Mr. Hale on page 198, “Twenty-six time in seventeen month sir. I must call that rare”. John Proctor does not speak highly of the town’s Reverend Parris. He deems him selfish and unable to carry out all the ways of the Lord. John is viewed by the villagers of Salem as a an who focuses more on his own home structure than the community’s.
John Proctor chooses to reject signing of his friends at the end of the play and is submitted to hanging for witchcraft. His affair with Abigail Williams destroys Salem and puts innocent people at risk of losing their lives. Lies and rumors name townsmen and women of being accused of witchcraft. John stays loyal to the friends he has in the community by advocating that there is no crimes being committed with oversees from the Devil. On page 200, Proctor confesses to Hale that he knows that the “children’s sickness has naught to do with witch craft”. By sacrificing himself, Proctor shows that he will die for and with his friends. Proctor’s morals were scarcely intact but his selflessness gains him self dignity that leaves an imprint on the society of Salem. John Proctor’s character in The Crucible demonstrates the complexities behind the Salem witchcraft.

My name is Rachel and I attend AHS. I have a part-time job at a local grocery store called Price Chopper. My family is originally from Upstate New York. We moved to New England in the 90’s after my father recieved a job oppurtunity here. I absolutely love Upstate New York. Each summer I visit there and stay with my grandparents. It’s a small town located in the center of the Adirondic Mountain Range. Once I graduate from high school I’d love to study at a college within the area.
In school the course I am taking are English 3 Honors, US History 2 Honors, Algebra 2, Chemistry, AP Politics, Music Theory, and Band. The clubs I am involved are National Honors Society, Link Crew (A freshman mentoring program), Site-Based Committee, Alliance, The Young Politicans Club, and Amnesty International.
Politics is my favorite hobby of all time. It’s the “nerd” side of me. Not many of my friends know how much I am really interested in it. I keep up to date with all politics going on within the country. Recently, I have been following the campaign trail of Presidential Nominee Barack Obama. The AP course I am taking is online and we are able to discuss politics with people from all over the country and even the world. So far it’s been such a great experience.
After highschool I want to major in history with a dual minor in political science and foreign relations. I’d like to be able to work for the United States government once I graduate. Law School is currently an option as well but that will happen if all my financial state is in good shape.
I hope you enjoy reading my blog. I’m a very energetic and outspoken individual. I have a supportive family and some wonderful friends. My life is very busy and also going to a fast beat tempo. Leave comments! Respond to my posts! See ya later alagator!
